Using Ice Fishing Lures in the Ice.

Ice fishing is defined as an activity of catching fish by means of lines and hooks or even spears. These implements are inserted through an opening in the ice on a frozen body of water. Ice fishing is a fun activity and you should feel comfortable in what you are doing, and confident. Some of the methods include "jigging" with short, light fishing rods and using tip-ups, keep in mind that there are many different kinds of jigging poles and tip-ups.

The tackle for this sport comes in all different shapes, sizes, colors, weights and the list doesn’t stop there. Several lures can be used for more than just one species, and others are designed specifically for a certain species.

Fishing over frozen water is a constantly evolving art with newer technology, equipment, and tackle always coming on the market. There's a lot to learn about and experience no matter which species you pursue. Ideally, the fishing is best just after the first solid freeze, but do not worry, there are more than enough fish to go around all winter long. Always keep safety in mind while on a frozen body of water in the dead of winter as it can be quite uncomfortable. Howling winds, a bitter arctic cold front, and frozen extremities await you unless you have some kind of shelter, such as an ice fishing house.

Take along your ice auger, or a hut and gear, and try your skills as you fish for lake trout, walleye, bass, northern pike, perch and whitefish. These can all be found in various lakes. Fishing for northern pike is one of the most exciting species that you can target. They are aggressive predators and will take almost anything you offer them. Also consider some of the lakes in northern Ontario, these can be a lot of fun and relaxing. December through March, as soon as the lakes freeze over, you will find fish houses are beginning to dot the glittering landscape, providing shelter for avid anglers.

Ice fishing action can be fast and furious when winter seals the lakes under ice. Best of all, there are no mosquitoes or flies to "bug" you. Ponds and lakes of all sizes in a frozen climate are suitable for this sport, with larger water bodies providing a wider diversity of fishing opportunities. Most state-owned lakes allow ice fishing, whereas county or municipally-owned waters may prohibit this activity.
